Why upgrading my ageing 2012 Macbook Pro to a supersonic powerhouse is a middle finger to Apple.
Back in January, Apple CEO Tim Cook sent shockwaves through the markets and announced a cut to its quarterly sales forecast, citing a slowdown in China and therefore muting its ambitions for growth in the world’s second largest economy.
At around the same time, my reliable Macbook Pro was itself experiencing a slowdown.
It took two minutes too long to start up. Applications bounced on the dock for an eternity. Web pages took ages to load. The battery lasted barely an hour unplugged… and it ran HOT. It was tittering towards being kaput. Well, I thought, I have had it nearly seven years… and it’s lasted remarkably well for something that’s classed as a disposable electrical item these days.

I started looking around for a worthy replacement in the January sales earlier this year. The new range of Macbook Pros with a fancy touch bar are incredible and will no doubt do everything I want. But the one I would buy costs £2,500. It’s not a drop in the ocean for a lowly freelance journalist such as myself.
Then I stumbled across this rather inspiring video purely by accident. The title was curious. What is this witchcraft? I built my own PC when I was 20… but upgrading a Mac was something I thought would need to be done by a professional… or so I thought!

As soon as I picked my mouth up from the floor at the shear realisation this sort of thing was possible, I headed to eBay and started to shop around for parts!
