The brief
The Central East ICB runs several structured education programmes for people living with diabetes, including DAFNE for people managing type 1 diabetes, DESMOND and EMPOWER for type 2 diabetes, and X-PERT.
The challenge was to explain these different programmes in a way that felt approachable, relevant and genuinely useful to people living with diabetes. These were not intended to be conventional NHS information films. They needed to show what the courses were actually like and, more importantly, demonstrate how they could help people take greater control of their condition.
The project became a series of films featuring real patients and their experiences, filmed across different locations in Hertfordshire and Essex. Each film needed to encourage people to consider attending a course by showing the potential difference that education, support and meeting others in a similar position could make.

The approach
The priority was putting real patients at the heart of every film. Their experiences could explain the value of the courses in a way that a scripted NHS message simply could not.
Rather than producing generic diabetes information videos, the series was designed to help people understand:
- What each diabetes education course actually involves
- What it is like to attend alongside other people living with diabetes
- How education and peer support can help with self-management
- What patients themselves gained from attending
- Why taking part could make a genuine difference to their everyday lives
Filming took place at the courses themselves and across different locations in Hertfordshire and Essex, keeping the films grounded in real environments rather than a studio setting.
Production
The project involved filming and producing a suite of diabetes education videos for different patient audiences. This included:
- Two DAFNE films focusing on education for people managing type 1 diabetes
- DESMOND and EMPOWER films for people living with type 2 diabetes
- An X-PERT film explaining the structured education programme
- Filming across multiple locations in Hertfordshire and Essex
- Recording genuine patient testimonials from people who had attended the courses
- Capturing the atmosphere and interaction within the education sessions
- Editing each film into a concise, accessible piece designed to encourage patients to find out more
- Working closely with the healthcare team to ensure the content remained accurate and appropriate
The emphasis throughout was on making the films warm and human while retaining the accuracy and credibility expected from NHS patient education content.
The result
The finished series gave the NHS a collection of patient-led diabetes education videos that could be used to introduce people to the different courses and encourage them to take part.
The strength of the films comes from the people featured. Rather than simply explaining what the programmes offer, patients who had actually experienced them could describe the difference they made in their own lives.
That makes this more than a conventional healthcare communications project. The films have the potential to reach someone at the point of diagnosis or when they are struggling to manage their diabetes, and show them that support, education and other people’s experiences are available.
By combining genuine patient testimony, multi-location filming across Hertfordshire and Essex and clear healthcare messaging, the project created a series of films designed not simply to inform, but to empower people to take the next step.
Why this project worked
This project shows the power of patient-led healthcare video. When someone living with diabetes explains how education and support changed their understanding of their condition, the message becomes personal, relatable and potentially life-changing.
The result was a series of NHS videos that could do more than explain diabetes education programmes. They could help someone recognise that support is available, understand what to expect and feel confident enough to take part.
