The brief
Cripps Leadership Advisors, a global executive search and leadership advisory firm with offices in London and Houston, wanted to develop a confident team of podcast presenters.
The brief was about much more than learning how to operate a microphone. The team needed to understand how to communicate naturally in an audio format, develop a credible presenting style and create conversations that would engage their target audience.
Rather than a standard presentation or media training course, the programme was designed around the realities of podcasting, giving participants the opportunity to practise, record, listen back and improve throughout the two days.
The ultimate aim was to give the team the confidence and practical skills to contribute to a podcast themselves, rather than simply teaching them how podcast equipment works.
The approach
The training was built around four core areas: understanding the audience, shaping the message, developing a natural presenting voice and practising with purpose.
Drawing on broadcast journalism and podcast production experience, the training focused on the skills that make presenters sound confident and authentic, rather than simply polished.
Across the two days, participants worked on:
- Finding a natural and credible presenting voice through recorded practice
- Vocal warm-ups, breathing, pacing and techniques for sounding clear and confident
- Understanding podcast audiences and shaping content around what they want to hear
- Structuring podcast episodes and developing questions that lead to better conversations
- Interviewing techniques, including listening, follow-up questions and keeping a conversation moving
- Handling difficult questions and sensitive subjects using media interview techniques
- Reviewing recorded performances and using constructive feedback to improve
The emphasis throughout was on doing rather than simply listening. Participants were encouraged to experiment, make mistakes and learn from them in a supportive environment.
Production
The programme was delivered as a full two-day practical course, with professional podcast equipment brought in so participants could experience the process for themselves. This included:
- Professional microphones and recording equipment provided for the training
- Practical exercises designed around the participants and their own podcast ambitions
- Recorded introductions and podcast segments for playback and discussion
- Interview role-play, including taking the role of both presenter and guest
- Listening exercises using contrasting podcast examples to explore tone, style and audience
- Peer feedback and individual guidance throughout the sessions
- Media interview techniques for handling challenging or unexpected questions
- A final video summary capturing the training and the team in action
Rather than leaving participants with a set of presentation slides, the training gave them practical experience they could take straight into future podcast recordings.
The result
The two-day programme gave Cripps Leadership Advisors a team with greater confidence in front of the microphone and a much clearer understanding of what makes a successful podcast conversation.
“Eric trained our team on podcast presenting, helping them understand audiences, shape their messaging and develop their presenting style, even bringing his own equipment. The session was well thought out, with a great balance of theory and practice.”
Eleni Young, Marketing Manager at Cripps Leadership Advisors
The combination of broadcast experience, professional equipment and hands-on practice meant the team could experience podcasting properly rather than simply discussing it.
For an organisation working in executive search and leadership, where expertise and credibility are central to the brand, the training focused on developing a presenting style that felt knowledgeable, natural and authentic.
Why this project worked
Podcasting can look deceptively simple. A microphone and a conversation are easy to see, but creating something that sounds confident, natural and worth listening to takes preparation and practice.
This project worked because the training dealt with the whole process, from understanding an audience and shaping a message through to presenting, interviewing and handling difficult questions.
It also demonstrates the value of practical podcast presenter training for businesses and professional organisations that want to develop their own podcast content, particularly where senior people, subject matter experts or leadership teams need to become confident contributors.
Podcast Presenter Training for Businesses
Podcast training can be tailored for organisations developing a new podcast, teams preparing to launch an internal series, or senior professionals who need to become confident podcast hosts and guests.
Training can cover presenting, interviewing, podcast structure, audience development, vocal technique, media interviews and handling difficult questions, with practical recording and feedback built into the session.
Professional recording equipment can also be provided, allowing participants to learn in the same environment they will use when creating their own content.
