I am a news junkie at heart, with a desire to know what is going on in the world. I am up-to-date with the latest technological developments and I enjoy using them to their full effect. I was the station's sole Field Reporter, where I had to generate big, local, original stories and tell them in a way that got listeners attention. I worked closely with mayors, MPs and the public. I was one of the first journalists on the scene at the Buncefield Oil Depot explosion in December, where I provided reports for stations all round the world. I supported a number of video and broadcast journalists with their video editing in a selection of departments. This was a unique opportunity to witness how news is distributed across the world.

I learnt the following:
Regular use of digital video & audio equipment was employed to record interviews and create broadcast report packages. The main editing software was 'Adobe Premiere' for video and 'Burli' for audio. On news days, we had access to a professional audio studio to record news bulletins and perform telephone interviews. I attended as many council meetings and court cases as possible to report breaking stories.
It was here I developed the idea of 'Nerve TV News' - the university’s first student current affairs show. I fronted the show with a co-host, wrote the script and produced some television reports. This received regional and national recognition and won me several awards, including best presenter, best newcomer and best show.

I received an excellent all-round computing and media education that both complimented each other on their converging possibilities. I passed the Practical Journalism module accredited by the NCTJ, which was a great introduction to the skills and theoretical knowledge needed to be a fluent journalist. The Advanced Video Production Module got me to grips with digital filming & editing, directing and producing.
Whilst at De Montfort, I also wrote articles for the student newspaper and was a co-presenter on the award winning Demon FM. I established my own web design company, Generic Produxions when I was commissioned to design a website for a popular sports team I was a member of (TaeKwon-Do). After three years of training the Korean martial art, I got up to a red belt. Also, I learnt some Spanish and developed my drinking skills.

This was a good all-round introduction to the world of media, where I learnt the practical production of photography, print, video and DTP - linked with extensive theory. I also developed my skills by using industry standard applications such as Adobe, Macromedia and QuarkXpress. Digital editing was not available, so we were taught the old 'cut and splice' method.
